What’s on the note frequency chart
- Note frequencies: all 12 notes in every octave from 0 to 8, in hertz to two decimal places. The 88 keys of a piano (A0, 27.50 Hz, to C8, 4,186.01 Hz) are shaded, and A4 (440 Hz) and middle C (C4, 261.63 Hz) are in bold.
- How the numbers work: an octave doubles the frequency, a half step multiplies it by about 1.0595, and the formula that gives any note from A4.
- Open strings in hertz: standard tuning for guitar, bass guitar, ukulele and violin, string by string, as a tuner shows them.
- Piano keys (11 × 17 in and larger): two octaves around middle C with every key named, so you can see where C4 and A4 sit.
Every value is worked out from A4 = 440 Hz and checked: the table, the examples in the text and the open strings all come from the same formula, rounded to two decimals.
How to use it
- Tune by ear or by tuner. A tuner shows the note and often the frequency. The open-string table tells you what each string should read: a guitar’s low E is 82.41 Hz.
- Find a note from a frequency. A sound at about 330 Hz is E4, the guitar’s high E string; one at about 196 Hz is G3.
- For science and audio projects. Each octave doubles: A2 110, A3 220, A4 440, A5 880. Each row of the table shows the doubling across the octaves.
- Octave numbers: the chart uses scientific pitch notation, where middle C is C4 and each octave starts on C.

Questions
Is it really free? Yes. Download it, print as many copies as you like, and share the link. No email or account.
Why is A4 440 Hz? It’s the international standard for concert pitch, used by tuners, pianos and most orchestras. Some orchestras tune a little higher, to 442 or 443 Hz; every note then moves up by the same small proportion.
Why do C♯ and D♭ have the same frequency? On a piano and in equal temperament they’re the same key, so they share one frequency: C♯4 and D♭4 are both 277.18 Hz.
Why does the table go below and above the piano? Octaves 0 and 8 reach past the piano’s lowest A and highest C. Organs, synthesizers and test tones use those notes, so the chart includes them in a lighter color.
Which size should I print? Letter or A4 has the full table, how the numbers work and the open strings. 11 × 17 in and larger add the piano keys.
Can I make my own version? Yes. In the Music Theory Poster Maker you can put your name or your class’s on it, choose the sections and pick a style. Personalized posters are $9 as a PDF.
