Lesson 24 of 25 · Reading the bass clef
All Cows Eat Grass
The four bass spaces, A-C-E-G.
What you’ll learn
The four spaces of the bass staff, from bottom to top, are A, C, E and G. The classic saying is “All Cows Eat Grass.”
Put the spaces together with the lines from the last lesson, and you can name every note on the bass staff.
One thing to watch: the C in the second space is not middle C. It’s an octave lower, often written C3. Middle C, C4, is the one on its ledger line above the staff.
How the lesson works
This round mixes the four spaces with everything from the bass lessons so far: F, middle C, B and the five lines. Every letter needs five right answers to fill its dots. When they’re all full, the last lesson in the strand unlocks.
