What’s on the ukulele chord chart

  • All 12 major chords: C, D♭, D, E♭, E, F, F♯, G, A♭, A, B♭ and B, each in a chord box with finger numbers and the root colored. Chords on a black key give both names (D♭ or C♯).
  • All 12 minor chords: Cm to Bm in the same layout.
  • Seventh chords (11 × 17 in and larger): all 12 dominant 7th chords, from C7 to B7.
  • How to read a ukulele chord chart (11 × 17 in and larger): which string is which (G, C, E, A: “My Dog Has Fleas”), what the dots, numbers and ○ mean, and why the G string sounds higher than the C.
  • Your first four chords (11 × 17 in and larger): C, G, Am and F, the four chords behind many pop songs.
  • Tuning your ukulele (11 × 17 in and larger): the four strings marked on a piano keyboard, so you can tune from a piano or keyboard.

All four strings are played in every chord. Every shape is worked out from standard tuning and checked: each box sounds only the chord’s notes and all of them, with one finger per fret.

How to use it

  • Start with C, Am, F and G. C and Am take one finger each, F is Am with one more finger, and G takes three. Play each for four strums and switch.
  • Change one finger at a time. From C to Am, lift the ring finger and put the middle finger down. Slow, smooth changes beat fast, messy ones.
  • Then add a 7th. G7 to C is the sound at the end of countless songs. Play G7, then C, and you’ll hear it settle.
  • For a class, print Letter or A4 copies for music stands and an A2 for the wall. Everyone reads the same chord shapes.
  • Need a chord the chart doesn’t have, like Csus4 or Dm6? The chord finder shows it on the ukulele and lets you hear it.

Questions

Is it really free? Yes. Download it, print as many copies as you like, and share the link. No email or account.

Which ukulele is it for? Soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles in standard G C E A tuning (G4 392 Hz, C4 261.63 Hz, E4 329.63 Hz, A4 440 Hz: see the note frequency chart), the tuning most players use. It also works with a low-G string: the chord shapes are the same. A baritone ukulele is tuned D G B E, like the top four strings of a guitar, so it needs different shapes.

Why does D♭ also say C♯? They’re the same chord on the same frets. Songs in flat keys call it D♭, songs in sharp keys C♯, so the chart gives both names.

Which size should I print? Letter or A4 has all 24 major and minor chords, enough for a music stand. 11 × 17 in and larger add the 7th chords, how to read the chart, the first four chords and tuning.

Is there a guitar version? Yes: the free guitar chord chart has the open chords, 7th chords and power chords for guitar.

Can I make my own version? Yes. In the Music Theory Poster Maker you can put your name or your class’s on it, choose the sections and pick a style. Personalized posters are $9 as a PDF.
