Free Note Reading Quiz for Your Class

Create a class test in a few seconds: 20 notes on the treble clef, the bass clef or both, with no hints. Each student enters their ID, takes it once, and sends you a result you can check.

Create a class test

Choose a speed and a clef, then select Create test link. Share the link with your class: in Google Classroom, or anywhere students can open a link.

Speed
Clef

Steady gives about four seconds a note, Brisk about three, Fast under two.

What students see

  1. Their ID first. The link opens the test with a box for the student ID or nickname you gave them. They can’t start without one.
  2. Twenty notes, no hints. The notes glide across the staff and students name each one before it reaches the line, by tapping a letter or typing it. There’s no pausing and no way out part-way, so every result is a full test.
  3. Their result, ready to hand in. The score, the notes they missed, and a Copy result button. They paste the result to you, for example as a private comment on a Google Classroom assignment.

Opening the link again on the same device shows the same result, not a new test.

Speeds and clefs

Speed Time per note A good fit for
Steady about 4 seconds Beginners, and a first test on a new clef
Brisk about 3 seconds Students who know the notes and can name them without counting
Fast under 2 seconds Fluent readers: they know each note on sight
Clef Notes in the test
Treble Middle C up to the G above the staff
Bass The F below the staff up to middle C
Both Notes on either staff, as in piano music

A test at Steady takes about two minutes; Fast takes about one.

Reading the results

Each result is a few short lines:

Trebly class test SURE: Steady, treble clef
Student: 12
95% (19 of 20 correct)
Missed: D

Check: https://trebly.fun/check/#…
  • The test code (SURE here) shows which of your tests it came from.
  • The missed notes are the ones to review with that student, or with the class if many missed the same note.
  • The check link opens the check page, which shows what the test actually recorded. If the result you were sent was edited, the check page shows the real score; if the link itself was edited, it says so.

Good to know

  • Nothing is stored by Trebly. The test’s settings are in its link, and the result travels in what the student sends you. Students need no account, and Trebly never sees their IDs.
  • Retakes are visible, not impossible. A student could take the test again in a private window or on another device, but you’d get a second result with a later time.
  • The check spots edits; it isn’t proof. It can’t tell who took the test, and a student who reads the site’s code could forge a result. For anything that counts, have students take it in class.
  • It doesn’t change a student’s own progress. A class test is separate from the Test students can take on their own, and from their practice records.

Questions teachers ask

Can students practice before the test?

Yes. Treble Clef Practice and Bass Clef Practice bring back the notes each student finds hardest, and the Test lets them try the same speeds on their own.

Can I change the number of notes?

Not at the moment. Every class test is 20 notes, so two results always mean the same thing.

Can I use one test link with several classes?

Yes. Every result carries the test code. If you’d rather keep classes apart, create a separate test for each class.

Do I need Google Classroom?

No. Any way of sharing a link works, and students can send you their result by email, in a chat, or wherever you ask.
